November in Cambridge
With the clocks going back and the dark nights drawing in, November often feels like one of the quieter months of the year, but there’s always plenty to keep you busy in Cambridgeshire. From fireworks to festivals, here are some of our favourite events in November in Cambridge.
If you’re heading to Cambridgeshire for the first weekend of the month, start November with a bang, and head down to Midsummer Common for Cambridge’s annual Bonfire Night celebration, one of the biggest free displays in the region. For a real treat, why not head up to the rooftop terrace at the nearby Varsity Hotel (weather permitting) and take in the fireworks with a cocktail from one of the best viewpoints in the city.
The Cambridge Literary Festival kicks off on Thursday 17th of November running for four days with over 50 different events taking place at 5 venues, including the Fitzwilliam Museum and the University Arms, this year’s festival partner. From Hugh Bonneville to George Monbiot the speakers at this year’s event are sure to inspire, and there’s even a festive quiz on Sunday 20th to bring the event to a close.
If you fancy a convenient injection arts of theatre arts this month, Matthew Bourne’s beautiful re-imagining of The Nutcracker will be screened at Huntingdon Cineworld, the Cambridge Arts Picturehouse and The Light Cinema Cambridge on Tuesday 15th and Sunday 20th of November. This is the first time the stunning show, recorded live at Sadlers Wells, will be seen on the big screen and is sure to bring a warm and festive feeling.
The Cambridge Jazz Festival is swinging into action from Thursday 10th to Sunday 27th November and with it the opportunity to see some world class musicians in action. Join the Brass Funkeys on opening night at Cambridge Junction, The Cambridge University Jazz Orchestra at West Road Concert Hall and countless other artists, plus a number of workshops and talks from some acclaimed musicians.
If you’re thinking about getting the Christmas shopping started, there are some excellent Christmas markets not to be missed this month – fairs at Burghley House, Ely Cathedral, Peterborough Cathedral and Presents Galore at Newmarket racecourse will all be taking place later in November – click here for more details.
